Summary

Production

  • In 2018, the production of cosmetic products in Bulgaria increased - compared to 2014, the production more than doubled, and compared to 2017 – the increase was over 50%. After the observed record in 2017, the production of perfumes and eau de toilette decreased, with the quantities of products manufactured in 2018 less than their production in 2016. Produced quantities of toothpaste reported no change - a slight decrease by 0.4% compared to 2017, while compared to 2014 the production more than doubled.
  • During the whole period under review, shampoo production was the largest in 2018 - an increase of about 4% over 2017 and 18% compared to 2014. The production of toilet soaps, shaving detergents, deodorants, bath detergents has been increasing nearly 2 times compared to 2017 and more than 3 times compared to 2014.
  • Preliminary data from the monthly production survey in 2019 show a 2.7% increase in the production of shampoos, while the production of toothpaste decreased by 1.3% compared to the same sample data for 2018.

Sales

  • In 2018, total sales of perfume and eau de toilette manufacturers decreased by 28.6% after the 2017 record. Shampoo sales also decreased on an annual basis by 10.3%.
  • Increase in sales of lotions and other hair care products - by 8% year-on-year. Sales of toothpastes increased by 1.3% compared to 2017, while sales of other oral hygiene products increased by 2%.
  • On the domestic market, shampoos sold by manufacturers decreased by 7.4% on an annual basis. There is also a decrease in the sales of perfumes and eau de toilette. The rest of the products’ domestic sales increased YoY – of lotions and other hair care products by 27%, of toothpaste - by 8.6%, of other oral hygiene preparations - by 30.6%. Toilet soap, shaving products, deodorants sold by manufacturers are up 14.3% compared to 2017.
  • Preliminary monthly survey data for 2019 show an increase in domestic toothpaste manufacturers' sales by 44.5% and by 7% of shampoos.

Import-Export

  • Foreign trade turnover of Bulgaria with perfumes and cosmetics in value in 2019 increased by 3.1% on an annual basis, and by 42.2% compared to 2014. The foreign trade balance is negative - compared to 2018 it decreased by 4.6% and compared to 2014 - by 11.5%.
  • In 2019, there is a slight decrease by 2.8% in the imported quantities of perfumes and cosmetics in Bulgaria compared to 2018, while compared to 2014 there is an increase of 14%.
  • The export of perfumery and cosmetic products from Bulgaria, although slowly, continues to grow in 2019. The increase compared to 2018 is only 0.1%, while compared to 2014 is over 38%.
